1. Think beyond large websites. Networking with other business owners or large websites is great, but you must also tap the smaller connections on the web today. Bloggers may just be regular people blasting their thoughts from the anonymity of their own home, but many of them have huge audiences of devoted fans, and you can reach those fans, as well as millions of people who frequent message boards and online forums.

2. Be prepared! There are some bits of information that you will need every time you introduce yourself to someone new or join a new networking website. You can save a lot of time if you have this information already prepared to quickly add into profiles, emails, or any other form of communication.

3. Stay involved. When it comes to networking sites and groups, you need to do more than simply post your profile. Though on occasion you will stumble upon valuable connections by mere coincidence, most networking gems are the result of at least a little work.

4. Make your profiles appealing. Online profiles should always be professional and enticing to your targeted audience. Take the time to include a condensed version of your resume and a few interesting personal facts, and ensure that all graphics and photos give the proper first impression.

5. Reconsider anything you post on other sites. If you have any accounts through the internet for personal use, never post anything there that you would not want prospective business connections to see. It is becoming common for people to Google your name if they are interested in contacting you for business purposes!

6. Don’t waste time! Make sure that your daily activities are in line with your end goals. There are so many opportunities for online business, but not all of them will be useful for your specific goals.

7. General networking sites are great, but search out the niche sites that cater directly to your area of business and your regional location.

8. Use software programs that track all of your networking connections from all of the various resources and groups you use. Tracking connections from each individual site can be too time-consuming.

9. List-building is a great tool that can lead to making money online, but you have to do more than store them in a database. Talk to people and get to know some of the people who have potential to help you along. Building relationships will always take you far.

Many investors and potential business owners see this slowdown as a golden opportunity. Experienced business buyers look to buy businesses in times of economic uncertainty, in the hope of realising a good profit by the time they decide to sell. It’s a chance to manoeuvre into a strong position ahead of an eventual economic recovery. The bad news is that you will need to be realistic about your price.

With supply outstripping demand, buyers are in a good position to negotiate and selling your business may mean accepting less than you hoped for a year earlier. This is the reality of the situation but there are a few things you can do to help you sell for close to your asking price:

1.) Tighten up the slack - Look at ways to reduce your expenses and review the way you do things. Get rid of any dead weight by searching around for better priced stock, supplies and utilities such as telephone, gas and electricity. Reducing your outgoings should improve your balance sheet and make your business a much more attractive proposition. Don’t settle for a price because it’s what you’ve always paid. You may have established a relationship with the seller which could be keeping you from finding the same product or service for less. Approaching current suppliers and negotiating reduced prices, could be a way for you to still remain loyal while at the same time receive the item for less.

2.) Pile them high - Consider ways to reward customers who buy in bulk. Whether you offer a product or service, offering the customer an improved rate for a bulk purchase lends itself nicely to the mindset during a recession. Purse strings start to tighten and people are looking for a good deal.

3.) Freshen up - As the saying goes “first impressions last forever”. I couldn’t agree more. Now is the time to apply that coat of paint you’ve been meaning to add for the past year, or fix that squeaky hinge that’s been annoying you. The last thing you want is a buyer thinking the place is falling apart and would require some outlay to fix it up. The same goes for maintaining a decent level of cleanliness.

4.) Get rid of clutter - Your business exists to make money, not to store unnecessary clutter. Your clutter may lead buyers to think that you manage your business in an unorganized way and could leave them worried that you may be hiding a few skeletons in the closet.

1. Concentration – The key to efficient proofreading is concentration. You are required to concentrate on finding the errors. I will recommend that you to turn off music and your cell phones, sit in a room in isolation, and forget about your SMS and emails, at least for a while. Don’t let anything interrupt or distract you.

2. Use printed copy – Instead of proofreading on a computer monitor try to proofread on a printed copy. This can eliminate the stress caused by the computer screen on your eyes. You can concentrate more and can find more errors while proofreading on paper, when compared to your computer screen. Moreover, it saves your precious eyes from a high amount of stress.

3. Watch out for Namesake – Namesakes are the names or words having the same spellings as others, but have different meanings.

4. Have a look at the contractions – Try to find out contracting words like “its” and “it is”, “you’re” and “your”, “their” and “they’re”. All of these words look similar but have very different meanings.

5. Punctuation – Look out for punctuation errors. Punctuation errors are hard to find, and you will need to concentrate hard on checking a sentence again and again to find all punctuation errors. Get a feel for the words and then decide whether the overall paragraphs are conveying the message you want to have.

6. Back track – Next tip is to read the blog starting from the last sentence. This is a very common technique used to find out the errors in the blog. Reading the blog from the last sentence makes you aware of the conclusion and now you have to check whether the blog is moving in the right direction by trying to find out the question. You know what you wanted to write and are less prone to miss the errors which otherwise would have been missed.

7. Have a break – Try to have a break after 20 – 25 minutes. Breaking up the proofreading of your document will increase your detection of errors.

8. Read out loud – This is another very important trick used in proofreading. By reading out loud, you read each word independently, which provides you a great chance to find the errors; whether punctuation errors or missed commas.

9. Ask someone else to proofread it – Once you are done with proofreading, ask someone else to take a look, this will help you ensure that your writing is free from errors and offer you another opinion on the tone of your post.

10. Check for grammatical errors – Finally, check for grammatical errors, these are the most basic mistakes one commits.

The best way to begin is by sitting down and making a list of all possible domain names that may be suitable for your business. Once your list is ready you need to find out whether these domains are available or not – then shorten your list by indicating the ones that are available. Having done this, now you are all set to take the final decision as to which domain you should get.

The domain name extension

This is another important issue that needs your attention. When buying a domain name most people prefer to opt for the ‘.com’ extension as this is the standard business practice. However there are exceptions to this – for example, Universities and educational institutes may want an ‘.edu’ extension and government bodies often opt for the ‘.gov’ extension. But if you are an online business, it is always better that you select a ‘.com’ domain as most browsers on the web also type a ‘.com’ extension by default when they are unsure of the extension of a website. Some experts are also of the opinion that search engines also tend to prefer a ‘.com’ domain name to others.

So if you find that the ‘.com’ extension for your domain is not available but one with ‘.org’ or even ‘.biz’ is available, it might still be advisable not to book the other extensions and select a different name that has the crucial ‘.com’ extension. However there are exceptions to this as well. For example if you are part of a network with an upline and a downline, then it might just be fine to select a ‘.net’ domain.

The domain name and business branding

Many online businesses believe in the power of branding – and they are right. Branding your business is often necessary, particularly if you are there for the longer haul. If this is the case, then you might want to get the domain name that matches the name of your business. For example, if you sell handbags online and the name of your company is “Leather Handbags Inc.” then you might want to get a domain name that is LeatherHandbags.com and if that is not available, then something that is as close to it as possible.

Well, look at things from the perspective of a recruitment agency director. If he were looking for top flight candidates to add to his team, what would he ideally be looking for?

Temporary or permanent experience in their specific type of recruitment
Previous experience as an employee or recruitment consultant in the relevant sector
A good track record in the area of recruitment previously worked in that proves you can get results
A positive and honest outlook

In the past I have been that recruitment agency director and on occasion my uppermost concern has been how to prevent a certain candidate from being snapped up by a competitor. Manage this and the key to the world is yours. How do you do it?

My personal viewpoint is that the first three years of working in recruitment jobs act as an apprenticeship. During this time your main aim is to become irresistible to companies searching for a recruitment consultant. It’s necessary to build on the factors mentioned above to do this. That is your experience in both temporary and permanent recruitment alongside an impeccable and proven track record in both. It’s essential to achieve this even if it means initial sacrifices in earnings potential. This is because once you have compiled a CV that illustrates that you are the ideal candidate for a recruitment consultant role, you can pick and choose to work in the sector that has the greatest financial rewards and these will more than make up for any shortfall in those first three years.

A good recruitment consultant is quite literally worth their weight in gold in the right sector of the industry. Take financial recruitment for accountants and the such for instance. Average fees for the top consultants is approx £8000 for each placement. If an average recruitment consultant makes 2 placements each month and an excellent one makes 5 the difference in their monthly fees would be £24K and over the year that would be a staggering £288K. A recruitment director would make a massive profit even from a large basic salary topped up with a 50% bonus. So it’s easy to see how top consultants in certain sectors can command huge earnings often of £100K plus. Better still as the consultants network of contacts increases their earnings get even better.

Yesterday I came across a consultant who had worked for 18months in temporary recruitment. She’s done extremely well making a bonus of £20K on a basic salary of £15K and so is now interested in a job with a basic of around £20K be it temporary or permanent. She is the reason why I’ve written this article because she is at precisely the point in her career where it’s time to think big. Any recruitment director would agree that profitable recruitment consultants are far and few between and that there are plenty of ‘big’ earning recruitment jobs to be found. She can now chase a recruitment job in a high paying sector. Her experience in a permanent recruitment job exceeds a year and is supported by a demonstrable track record making her the perfect candidate. What’s more it’s the same job but with bigger rewards!

At the beginning I said that not everyone can cope with working in recruitment jobs, and that is true. If you can and you are good you can make the most of the opportunities that come your way to forge a career that has huge potential for earning vast pots of money. All that is required is some careful consideration in choosing those first few jobs.

One. A focused strategy. Your business model must have a strategy that is focused and that is detailed. You must know exactly what you want to do and what you have to do to get it. This is not a one page report and the more detailed it is, the better. Don’t skimp on even the smallest things, because it can be your undoing. Point A must be your groundwork, point B your core strategy and Point C is the profits. All successful business are surviving on a focused strategy, one that can be implemented easily.

Know your role. Especially when you entering a partnership, it is important for you to know what your duties are and the role you are going to play in the business. Don’t deviate but don’t be afraid to diversify when you need to. When everyone can play their part and play their part well, then the business will be well on their way to writing the chapters of success.

Have everything in black and white. Write everything down. Deal with clients through emails and documents are your friends. This raises the level of accountability on both the clients and the business side and you will have something to fall back on if anything goes wrong. It also gives you a clear idea on where the point of weakness is and how you can repair it.

Excellent money management is absolutely essential in starting a business. Research the market and ensure you are getting the best quality at the best price you can get that quality at. Every dollar in the world of business is crucial and you should not be frittering investment and development dollars away at non essential items.

Have a stash of risk capital at the ready. This is important when you need a bailout or when you need to pump in money quick to either make the business resurface of change the strategy to hit an emerging market. Having risk capital at the side means you have a backdoor in case things get awry.

These are just some of the quick points to note when you are thinking of starting your own business. The last advice I will give anyone is not to rush into things and attack your business plan from every angle possible, only then will you find out the flaws before they find you.
